Let the mourning for Ugly Betty
continue. A couple of days ago, we reported that Mark Indelicato was distraught at how
the ABC comedy was cancelled. Now, we’re hearing more stars of the series worry over the recent axing of the show.
Vanessa Williams and Michael Urie, who make up the hilarious boss-lackey duo of Mode, have both expressed their disappointment at the Ugly Betty demise. Neither of them hoped for it, but the news of the show’s end wasn’t as shocking as they thought.
“I gotta be honest, we’re devastated,” Williams told Showbiz Spy. “We’re sad, we’re not ready for it to end.”
The 46-year-old actress even added that she was outraged at how the ABC heads made the decision so quickly. It’s just been a year since the Ugly Betty cast and crew moved filming from Los Angeles to New York, then this hits them.
“We just moved to New York. We just got on a roll,” Vanessa Williams went on. “Our season this year has been the best we’ve ever had. But numbers and ratings were a concern. A lot of people couldn’t even find us.”
The schedule was another thing to blame. “We switched — we were put on Thursday then taken off then Fridays, now we’re finally on Wednesday nights,” she explained. “But we’re sad.”
Even the comical Michael Urie agrees. He told The Huffington Post that he was “[n]ot shocked, but still saddened. Secretly hoped we had one more move in us, back to one of our former time slots.”
Despite their sorrow, however, the Ugly Betty cast still has to push through with the last few episodes. The finale is scheduled to air in April, so everyone still has time to wrap it all up.
“Everyone is sad, but still enjoying each other and the material,” Urie declared. “We are very lucky to have a solid two month period to savor every last moment. It’s a lucky thing to know when the end is, many shows do not.”
While that truly is looking at the bright side of this situation, that still doesn’t bring back Ugly Betty in its entirety. Still, let’s just be ready for whatever they throw at us in that finale.
Vanessa Williams is angry at U.S. TV bosses for axing her hit comedy “Ugly Betty“, insisting the cast is “devastated” by the news. The U.S. version of the series turned Emmy winner America Ferrera into a household name after it debuted in 2006.
But ABC executives announced last month the series’ current fourth season will be its last. And Williams is outraged programming bosses have scrapped the show just a year after uprooting the cast and crew from Los Angeles to film in New York. She also blames them for failing to give the show a regular time slot for fans to follow.
Williams explains, “I gotta be honest, we’re devastated. We’re sad, we’re not ready for it to end. We just moved to New York. We just got on a roll. If the fans are devastated about hearing of Ugly Betty
being axed, we can only imagine what the actors involved must feel. For years they’ve taken on the skin of their characters, only to have the show cut off by the network all of a sudden. It came as a shock to these guys, to say the least.
Mark Indelicato, who plays Justin on the ABC comedy, told Hollywood Life how horrible he felt upon hearing the news. It isn’t just getting pulled out of the show that bothers him, but he still appreciates all those experiences and lessons he’s gathered throughout.
“It’s been an amazing four years,” the Ugly Betty star declared. “I’ve learned so much from the wonderful actors I have worked with, it’s sad to see this come so unexpectedly, but I think that we all recognize the tremendous work that we have done, and am very grateful for that.”
Of course, he isn’t the only actor who we believe is saddened by the show’s cancellation. We can bet the rest of them are, but we’re pretty sure the Ugly Betty fans are feeling much worse.
A friend of Mark Indelicato sympathized with the actor and told the publication what they thought of the cancellation. It’s really going to be difficult to move on from a show like that.
“We have seen Mark literally grow up on Ugly Betty these past four years,” the star’s friend said. “He has truly grown as an actor and as a young man.”
There really needs to be some growing up now that the show’s been cut, so it truly is a good idea to scout for new projects. It may not be as good as Ugly Betty, but we sure are looking forward to what Mark Indelicato has to offer.
“I’m really excited to see what comes next for him after the show ends,” his pal went on. “He turns 16 this year and has an entire career ahead of him. I know he will miss the relationships and bonds he developed seeing the same people every day, but they have formed really wonderful friendships that I don’t see why won’t continue into the next phase of his life and career.”
Struggling with rating for two seasons after a phenomenal success in season one and two, “Ugly Betty” finally gives up to ABC casualties this midseason. The current fourth season will be the last fans will see of America Ferrera, Vanessa Williams, Eric Mabius and the rest of the Mode gang. The show’s episode order which was placed at 22 is now trimmed to 20.
However, in a joint statement released on Wednesday, January 27, creator Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson said that they will give the show a proper ending. “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this ‘Ugly Betty’s’ final season,” they said. “And (we) are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
Steadily declining in rating, “Ugly Betty” hit the rock bottom in season four with 5 million average on viewership. The show had its glory in season 1 with 11 million viewers per week and two Golden Globes
winnings. However, it started to lose viewers in the second half of season 2 and ABC eventually put it on Friday night slot where viewers are mostly not home. In a bid to crank up the rating, ABC moved it to Wednesday night comedy line-up but apparently it didn’t work out as expected.

Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) may have already snagged Connor in the previous episodes of Ugly Betty, but we’re pretty sure he’s not the first guy she’s targeted. According to Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly, we’ll be meeting one of Willie’s old flames soon enough.
Sources have revealed that Tony Award-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell has bagged a role on the ABC comedy. He’ll be portraying Don, a simple guy who used to date our Mode diva. He’s not exactly the type of person we’d expect to see Willie with, since he truly is everything she isn’t.
Taking the adage “Opposites attract” to the extremes, Don is as down-to-earth as Wilhelmina is self-absorbed. He’s also more traditional than expected, in addition to having a blue collar job. Perhaps the high-fashion sense of Willie was what drew him in back then.
The 52-year-old actor will be appearing on Ugly Betty in either late February to early March, if all goes well with the schedules. Also, his portrayal of Don is a potentially recurring role. Does that mean he could go head-to-head with Connor? That is, if he actually does have feelings for Wilhelmina still.
Brian Stokes Mitchell is perhaps best known for his numerous roles on Broadway, particularly for his performance in 2000 for Kiss Me, Kate. He won a Tony for his portrayal there, but continued his work on stage. Mitchell then played the title role for the 2002 Kennedy Center revival of Sweeney Todd.
On television, the actor has had a seven-year stint on the series Trapper John, M.D. and even had a recurring role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He was also the neighbor and nemesis of the lead character in Frasier.
Now that he’s managed a part in Ugly Betty, we can only expect the best from him. He may be an Average Joe, but seeing him stand by Wilhelmina as she keeps up her reputation? That would indeed be priceless.
Veteran entertainer Liza Minnelli is heading to New York for a new show – she will reportedly join the cast of the Big Apple’s most fashionable comedy “Ugly Betty” for the next season. The “Cabaret” star will play an “outrageous drama teacher” in the hit series, which focuses on the daily life of a lowly assistant at a top fashion magazine.
Minnelli will appear as Betty’s camp nephew Justin’s high-school teacher in several episodes, and will start shooting in late January, according to Fox411.com. A source tells the website, “There were massive rumors last year, then again in early January, that Liza was being courted for the show, but Liza originally hadn’t planned to do the show.”
“‘Ugly Betty’ producers presented her with a great offer and a hilarious story and they kept coming back to her. She’s going to be playing an outrageous drama teacher and it is going to be fun!” Previously, Minnelli was a TV regular on hit comedy “Arrested Development” between 2003 and 2006.

Talk about deadline pressure. ABC’s decision to not only cancel Ugly Betty but to reduce the show’s episode order from 22 to 20 has left producers racing to tie up four years’ worth of story lines in just a handful of episodes. The first order of business: straightening out Betty’s unresolved dental issues.
“The braces are coming off,” reveals series creator Silvio Horta of the March episode, which will find America Ferrera’s Betty being whisked off on an It’s a Wonderful Life-esque journey. “There’s a big fantasy element to it. We’ll ask the question, ‘What if Betty had perfect teeth?’”
Change will also come to Betty’s professional life via a new job opportunity that “may take her away from Mode,” teases Horta. “We’re going to see how that impacts the people she works with as well as her family.”
Elsewhere, questions surrounding Justin’s sexuality will be addressed (spoiler alert: he’s gay!), Wilhelmina’s first love (played by Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell) resurfaces, and, as I previously reported, a major character will get hitched in the series finale.
In possibly related news, rumor has it Christopher Gorham has been approached to reprise his role as Betty’s ex-love Henry — something Horta would neither confirm nor deny.
For his part, co-star Michael Urie (Marc) is of the opinion that his onscreen frenemy should end up single. “I don’t think the right guy has come along yet for Betty,” he offers. “Besides, I don’t think [fans] would be truly satisfied if she ended up with anybody.”
