Actor Eric Mabius has lashed out at U.S. TV executives over the cancellation of “Ugly Betty” last year, accusing them of neglecting the cast. Bosses at ABC stunned the stars and fans of the show in January last year by announcing the programme’s fourth season would be its last.
Several of the cast members went public with their disappointment about the cancellation ahead of the final episode, which aired in America in April. Mabius, who played magazine boss Daniel Meade, has now opened up about the axing of the show, revealing the stars of the programme felt “battered about” by network chiefs and were devastated by the snub.
He tells Britain’s The Sun, “Our show ended too early. We were battered about by ABC and even if the fans wanted another series they couldn’t have got it because we had been raked over the coals so much by the network. We put our best feet forward and felt neglected. Everyone was upset with them for canceling Ugly Betty.”
However, Mabius is hopeful of a big screen follow-up to the popular series, so fans can see a happy ending for his character and former assistant Betty Suarez, played by America Ferrera. He adds, “There may still be a romantic conclusion for Daniel and Betty. The fans want a film and hopefully that will happen if enough people ask for it. Sex and the City was put under a lot of scrutiny when it became a film but certainly didn’t suffer in the box office.”

Only days ago, fans of the once incredibly successful ABC series “Ugly Betty” had to say goodbye to their favorite characters, after the network’s decision to have it go out on a relatively high note as ratings plummeted. ABC is not done with “Ugly Betty” though, as writer Azita Zendel has just filed a lawsuit against the network, TMZ has learned.
According to several sources, Zendel worked as director Oliver Stone’s assistant for about 4 years, an experience she used to write, direct and star in the movie “Controlled Chaos.” It’s precisely from this film that ABC and Touchstone lifted several things that they later used for a few episodes of “Ugly Betty,” Zendel claims in court papers.
“‘Ugly Betty’ just went off the air and now a writer / director is claiming the show’s producers, including ABC and Touchstone, ripped off her idea – this according to a federal lawsuit. In the court documents, filed today in federal court in Los Angeles, Azita Zendel says she wrote a screenplay which became the movie ‘Controlled Chaos’ – and that several episodes of ‘Betty’ are similar to her movie,” TMZ says of the lawsuit.
Both defendants can’t even claim in court they never knew Zendel either, since she was approached for a collaboration that eventually fell through, the court papers further claim. Now, she believes the deal did not happen because producers deemed it better if they just stole her ideas instead of paying her for them. “According to the docs, Zendel claims the producers of ‘Betty’ got their hands on her project because she submitted it to them for a possible distribution deal – but instead they allegedly used it without compensating her,” TMZ further says of the same lawsuit.
Neither ABC nor Touchstone has yet responded in any way to the claims. Zendel is asking for undisclosed damages from them, TMZ also reports. On a brighter note, we were telling you the other day that, while its run on TV might have come to an end, chances for “Ugly Betty” to come to the big screen are looking up right now, if ongoing rumors are anything to go by.
